Credits-Approximately 75% of this work comes form Willard Godbee of
Sardis GA. About 5% comes from the family history information and first
hand knowledge of Norman Thomas (Tom) Clarke of Millen GA. About 15% comes
from the family history work of Saralena Clarke Hatcher (deceased) of Millen
GA. The remaining 5% comes from direct research by Dale Royal of Barnesville
GA.
1-Henry Clarke b ? d 15 Jan 1846 m ?. According to Norman Thomas
Clarke, a well-known dairy farmer currently living in Millen GA, Louise
Cullen Wall told him that family stories said that this Henry Clarke came
from England with his three brothers. This Henry Clarke was supposed to
have had a grandson named Henry also(see below). He was a revolutionary
soldier. This Henry Clarke is buried in a family cemetary on the farm Northeast
of Alexander GA near Brier Creek on a little stream called Spring Creek
which runs through the property. This farm and cemetary have no visible
signs at this time and the general area of the cemetary and farm is all
that is known. It is located off of Brown-Mobley Road NE of Alexander GA
and the location has been passed down to Norman Thomas Clarke from his father.
Note that there is a John Clarke given a English Crown Land Grant on April
2, 1758 of 200 acres bounded on the southwest by Bryer Creek. The original
warrant states "200 acres upon the north side of Briar Creek about
six miles from the Savannah River bounded on all sides by vacant land."
This is very close to the location of the farm mentioned above, if not
the exact location. There is a Henry Clarke and John Clarke who take an oath
of allegiance to the state of GA in 1784. There is a Henry, John, and William
Clarke all listed together in 1793 and 1798 in the GA Tax digest. It is
estimated that these were brothers and I will do further research here.
Note-The following list of the family and their birthdates is on a family
history page in an old family Bible which belonged to Amelia Allday Cullen.
This Bible is currently in the possesion of Norman Thomas Clarke. It has
a quote which reads "The names above are the children of Henry Clarke
and the dates that they were born, October The 5th - 1845." This Clarke
family page does not match the Bible in which it is located and it is loose.
Apparently it was from yet another Bible and was handed down and placed
in this Bible.
Henry and this unknown wife had issue 11 thru 17:
11-Drewy Clarke b 27 Sept 1793 d 1827 a pauper with a $5 fee charged
to the poor funds which was paid October 21 1828. The fee was for making
a coffin for Drewy Clarke in 1827.
12-Christopher Clarke b 16 March 1795 d ? m Easter Joiner ? b 1809
d ? Christopher Clarke lived in Burke Co GA and was a farmer. He later
bought land (The McGlohorn Place) in NE Jenkins CO GA in Green Fork community
5 miles east of Perkins GA. It is believed that he never lived there.
He lived , died, and was buried on the family farm mentioned above near
Alexander in the family cemetary. After his death, his wife lived with their
daughter Sarah Clarke Allday in the Greenfork Community. His son George
Washington Clarke lived nearby too on the farm that Christopher Clarke bought.
Easter Joiner was the daughter of Sallie Burke and Tom Joiner. She had
three brothers named Tom Joiner, Math Joiner, and Jurden Joiner. This
Christopher and Easter Clark family is listed in detail in the Census of
1850 which says that there is a Christopher Clarke, illiterate, male, age
55 farmer with real estate valued at $970, Easter, illiterate, age 41 ,
female, Sarah 17 f, Eliza 15 f, Louisa 13 f, Nancy 10 f, Jasper 7 m, George
5 m, and Christopher 2 male.
Note-Norman Thomas Clarke has receipts where Christopher (Tom's Great Grandfather)
paid taxes for his sister Sarah in 1831, 1839, and 1845. He also paid the
taxes for sister Cynthia in 1831. On March 6, 1847, a land grant of June
5, 1770, which belonged to Sarah Clarke's grandfather Christopher Clarke
was resurveyed for Sarah and Christopher Clarke(which is likely to be this
Sarah and Christopher). This land is that which was bounded on the northeast
by John Fitch and contained 265 acres. This implies a Christopher Clarke
father of our first Henry Clarke and I plan to do more research here!
